On the afternoon of September 23rd, the 2021 Xishan Middle School English Discipline Development Seminar and Master Studio Event initiated by Jiangnan Foreign Studies Teaching and Research Center and Xishan Teacher Development Center was held at Er Quan Middle School.The purpose of this meeting was to promote the teaching exchange activity on “reading a whole book” and discuss “the effectiveness of English classroom teaching in middle school”.The participators included teacher representatives from Jiangnan University’s School of Foreign Studies, heads of the teaching and research group of Xishan junior high school, heads of the lesson preparation team of each grade, and members of the master teacher studio.

Professor Gu Qiyi from Jiangnan University’s School of Foreign Studies gave a presentation entitled "English Extended Reading and Teacher Development".She started with the significance of expanding reading to teaching, and analyzed three organizational forms ofextended reading teaching:students' independent reading, student reading community and teacher-led teacher-student communication. She proposed an effective model of extended reading teaching,and pointed out the benefits for teachers' development.

The participators shown great interest in extended reading, and discussed the effectiveness of English teachingin middle schools.They proposed that in the future, teachers should rely on extra-curricular readingmaterialsto improve the quality of reading; should align with the standard to cultivate students' thinking and language ability; should refine teaching objectives and design classroom teaching withan effect-oriented approach; should optimize the classroom model and cultivate students' core English literacy; should improve task teaching and explore the effective model of combining reading and writing.

Our teacher representatives and Xishan’s master teachers alsoconductedin-depth exchanges on topics related tothe development of Middle School English teachers, and both sides hoped to have moreopportunities for learning and cooperation in the future.
