Course Description:

This Course is to introduce the different eras of the West, together with its historical events. But our primary purpose is not merely to memorize some facts, but rather, with the vision of historical penetration, to organically study Western civilization, the spiritual cores of which are the Hebrew spirits, the Greek's individualism and the Romans' sense of social responsibility. We shall try to locate the soul of Western civilization--her cultural patterns and religious spirits and the cultural drives therein to usher in reforms. We shall study the rise and fall of Greece, the cultural heritage from Rome, Medieval civilization, the Renaissance, the expansion of modern industrial West and its Pandora's curse. Hence, we will widen students' global vision and develop their ability to rationally analyze Western civilization. An anti-Western-culture-chauvinism attitude is our ultimate position
