To help the 2022 freshmen become better prepared for college life, the School of Foreign Studies recently held a series of lectures comprising four parts: thought education, model encouragement, daily management and academic plans. The lectures were held on-site and virtually, in which Lu Fang, Secretary of the Communist Youth League subcommittee, Wang Yanling, Director of the Dean's Office and Miao Wenjian, Counsellor of undergraduates,as well as model students, shared their advice with freshmen.
1. Thought education for freshmen
Since the start of the new semester, the School has held thought education lectures for 2022 freshmen, with an eye on students' beliefs and ideology. On the afternoon of October 5th, the report meeting of 2022 Summer Vacation Social Practice Activities was held. With the theme "Pay tribute to the 20th National Congress and make progress in social practice", the meeting showed the achievements of twelve best groups of the school. To strengthen the beliefs of college students, guide the freshmen to take the first step towards the Party, enhance their political beliefs, and raise their awareness, on October 9th, Zhang Longfei, the secretary of the last student party branch, delivered the thought education lecture for freshmen, effectively guided them to deepen their understanding of the CPC and raised their political and ideological awareness, laying a solid foundation for freshmen as they enter college life.
2. Model senior students sharing their experience
At the beginning of September, the School organized a share session for freshmen. The session invited Zou Weijuan, a member of the volunteer teacher group, and Sheng Xiaoyan, one of the top ten students of Jiangnan University as lecturers. Zou Weijuan shared her experience as a secretariat of the Communist Youth League branch and the student party branch. Besides, she shared her gains in the process of teaching as a volunteer. By picking questions from a blind box, Sheng Xiaoyan answered questions asked by freshmen and shared her experience in college. She encouraged freshmen to set specific goals and take action. She said that for all the setbacks, everyone should stick to the goal, believe in oneself, and never give up.
3. Organize grade conference and explain rules and regulations.
To help students adapt to their college life, know school rules and regulations and cope with common questions, the School held a grade conference for 2022 freshmen in mid-October. At the conference, Wang Yanling, Director of the Dean's Office, gave guidelines about undergraduate programs, student information management, registration and cancellation of courses, course tests and teaching assessment, helping students have a deep knowledge about rules and regulations. Counselor Miao Wenjian introduced rules and regulations related to thought education, academic performance, awards and assessment, and daily management, which gave freshmen a panoramic view of college life and future goals.
4. Academic performance and plans
To encourage students to quest for excellence, explore their life, and finally become talents of this new era, on October 19th, the School organized a session to share model senior students' experiences with freshmen and sophomores. The session invited five students who had been recommended to prestigious universities and students awarded China National Scholarships. Through this session, they encouraged students to set goals, make plans and strive constantly towards the goals. On October 20th, the School invited the outstanding alumna Xie Tingting to give an online lecture about her story of starting a business. This lecture provided a promising path for every student and sparked their ambition, encouraging them to set their goals and make progress.
At the moment of celebrating the 20th National Congress, we should constantly strive for a brighter future. Transitional lectures are a significant channel for changing students' roles and a key project in cultivating higher education talents. The completion of transitional lectures can facilitate freshmen adapt to college life and make plans for studies. We believe that 2022 freshmen students can meet a better self in School of Foreign Studies through relentless efforts.
