From 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on September 25, 2022, the 2022 “HOPE CUP” National College English Competition (preliminary round) was held as scheduled in the first teaching building of our school, attracting over 1300 participants. Our school attached great importance to the relevant preparation and organization of this competition, formulated a detailed working plan, and established a leading organization and working group of the National College English Competition of Jiangnan University. Thanks to the support and cooperation of the school office, student affairs department, academic affairs office, the logistics management office, the security office and other relevant functional departments, this competition was successfully completed.

To strictly comply with the epidemic prevention plan, all candidates must wear masks and have their temperature checked before entering the teaching building, and disinfectant was placed in the examination room. To carry out the competition smoothly, the college held several meetings about the preparation work. On the very day of the competition, the leaders of the Academic Affairs Office, Student Affairs Department, and Logistics Management Office inspected the examination rooms accompanied by Shi Zhihong (college secretary of the Party Committee), and Liu Boxian (the vice secretary). The examination staff and the invigilators shared specific responsibility and each performed their own duties. Thanks to the adequate preparation in advance, epidemic prevention, examination room arrangement, invigilation training, examination paper security and transportation, listening playback, examination room invigilation, paper collection, and scoring were carried out in a standardized and orderly manner.

After the examination, our school of foreign languages arranged for teachers to conduct a centralized scoring of those papers. The grading process strictly conformed to the standards, efficiently completed the statistical proofreading of the grading, and would conduct interviews based on the written examination later to ensure the fairness and accuracy of the competition.

The National College English Competition has begun since 1999 and was held once a year. It was approved by the relevant departments of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Education University Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee and the University Foreign Language Teaching Research Association of Colleges and Universities, which boasts its status as the only college students’ comprehensive English ability competition in the country. The competition aims to arouse students’ interest in learning English and enhance their comprehensive English skills.

This competition is a vital part of the extracurricular activity of English teaching in our university as well as an effective exploration of the practical teaching mode of application-oriented talent training of “promoting learning by competition, and teaching by competition”. Besides, it has greatly evoked the enthusiasm of college students for English learning, helped them consolidate and expand their basic knowledge and basic skills of English, and exerted an effective impact on promoting the emerging of a sound atmosphere for foreign language learning on campus.
