On September 8 at 2 p.m, all the teachers from the college gathered online to celebrate the 38th Teacher's Day, and carried out an discussion on this symposium with the theme of “ welcome of the 20th National Congress of CPC，cultivation of our new generation”. Mr Xie Jingxian, associate dean of the college, were in attendance, and Mr Xing Jiafeng, secretary of the college held this meeting.
To begin with, Liu Ling, office director of the center, led all the teachers to study the keynote speech of President Xi Jinping regarding “Teaching Morality”, and pointed out that teachers are the main foundation of education, the life source of success to education. To set high standards and strict requirements for teachers is not only responsible for students, but also responsible for the nation. Morality and ethics of teachers are becoming the benchmark of the whole society. We should construct it by setting high moral standards, not merely emphasizing its bottle line. A good teacher should first teach students with high moral standards and seek to win their esteem and respect.”
Subsequently, teachers' representatives spoke freely in light of the topics and carried out a heated discussion.
Ms Wang Liping mentioned that teachers should pay attention to guide students to enhance national pride and sense of responsibility in and outside of class, to keep the faith of achieving China’s national rejuvenation. Meanwhile, the education of political ideology should be integrated into the daily teaching, which refers to promoting “core socialist values”, encouraging students to participate in the construction of party and serve the people, and shoulder their responsibility of country’s revitalization.
Ms Wu Xinxin shared her experience with us from four aspects based on the basic English course targeted on master of public foreign language. She stressed that teachers should be a good example, and keep a role in shaping young minds, adhere to the concept of lifelong learning, and constantly update knowledge to achieve higer level of teacher ethics. Not only that, teachers should cherish posts and devote wholeheartedly to education, which is a basic requirement of teacher ethics. This is because that the sense of achievement and happiness of teaching inspire thousands of them to make contributions to the education. Ms Wu further highlighted that we should strengthen the moral cultivation of teachers, and strive to be self-disciplined and enterprising educators for students.
Ms Ma Xiaoyun discussed the importance of ideological and political teaching in the course of English writing for public foreign doctors. She pointed out that the class teaching should constantly improve the ideological and moral cultivation, humanistic quality, scientific spirit, legal consciousness, national security consciousness and cognition of doctoral students, so that to build confidence in our chosen path, guiding theories, and political system, and most importantly, confidence in our culture by correctly understanding the law of our history.
According to Ms Ma, the role of a teacher is often defined as "preaching, teaching and solving problems", but in practice teachers tend to focus on the latter two roles and neglect their duty to preach. "Preaching" is not only limited to promoting the correct worldview, value and outlook on life with words, but also requires teachers to set an example in their words and actions by establishing a sense of rules, starting with specific good habits such as honesty and punctuality.
Ms Hu Chun believes that it is important to optimise the supply of content and to enhance the awareness and ability to carry out the construction of curriculum thinking and politics. She also pointed out that, in addition to the teaching of the course, students' psychological health should also be taken into account. And students should be guided to resolve their occasional overly aggressive or negative views. Some students may have emotional problems, and they should be promptly identified and guided to eliminate difficulties and resolve their emotions with the help of teachers.
Then, Vice President Xie Jingxian led an in-depth study of the university's newly revised "Jiangnan University Endeavour Plan (2021-2030)". With "one goal, two actions, three systems, four projects and five indicators", Dean Xie explained in depth the development opportunities and explorable areas for the school and teachers in the new context.
The teachers expressed the need to further study and understand Xi Jinping's Socialist Thought with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, to take the study of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important discourse on education, especially teacher ethics, to a deeper level, to strengthen ideals and beliefs, to cultivate patriotic sentiments, to cultivate noble teacher ethics, to unite and make all-out efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the school, to strive to achieve the Endeavour Plan, and to greet the 20th Party Congress with an uplifting spirit.
