Part ONE: Introduction to the club

Jiangnan University English Debate and Speech Club is a skills training club led by teachers and students of the School of Foreign Studies. It mainly focuses on English debate and English speech novice training and brainstorming. The club over the years cultivates excellent students for "Uchallenge" National English Debating Competition and English Speaking Competition and the English debate team made it to the national finals in five years consecutively and achieve the final success.

Part TWO: Members' experience

The five students who shared their experience today are all core members of the club. They firmly believe that it is not because they are excellent that they choose to join, but they become excellent for it. What kind of colorful experience did they have in English debate and what kind of benefit did they get in the community? Here is the answer now!

Zhong Zhouyao: Benefit from English debate, I harvested knowledge, meet good partners and sharpened my will. The topics involved in the English debate enabled me to learn a lot of the latest political and livelihood issues and relevant knowledge, either passively or actively. The process of analyzing the topics also helped me gradually develop a clearer and rigorous thinking mode. During the preparation, my partners and I were determined to practice in a whole holiday. I thought it would be one of the countless goals I set that could not be achieved, but finally I unexpectedly made it and experienced the feeling of having an honor logo in the club QQ group.

Feng Shu: It has been proved that even people who are easily nervous and unsure of themselves can survive in the world of English debate. Entering the field of it, which seems very scary, has provided new answers to many puzzles in my life. The training I received in the English debate team was beneficial to my language learning. Responsible teachers, excellent partners and classmates gave me a lot of motivation, and my progress in this aspect is indeed one of my most cherished achievements in my undergraduate time.

Wang Jie: At the beginning, when I came into contact with English debate because of my passion, I found that it was a matter of constantly refreshing the bottom line of my cognition of my ability after in-depth understanding. I remember many moments: I had to speak on stage for seven minutes when I was about to collapse, and I was repeatedly beaten by my opponents, and then I had to start again, was forced to learn new areas and perspectives. But at the same time, I was surprised to find that I won 1st place after a debate when I picked a topic I was particularly familiar with, which was a moment of incomparable fulfillment and satisfaction. Well, English debate is such a process of being beaten and enrichment. And when I decided to participate in English debate and competition, I may have touched an opportunity to realize qualitative change. It can be said that if you are not afraid of challenges, English debate will certainly be a platform for you to gain and grow.

Zhao Yuchen: "Low sense of acquisition" is a puzzle many English college students have, so I am no exception. However, English debate not only gives me the opportunity to intensively activate my English listening, speaking and memorizing abilities, but also provide me the chance to contact with multi-field debate topics, debaters and judges from different universities and countries, opening up the horizon in the collision of thinking and getting rid of the prejudice caused by cognition limitation. The improvement of my oral English ability, the expansion of my way of thinking, the accumulation of experience and awards, these are the achievements that English debate has brought to me. “Tempered into a steel” is exactly right.

Wu Qinye: I got to know the English debate for the first time in the international debate competition in Nanjing. At that time, I was in a state of confusion and was at a loss at the stage. However, I persevered for the five rounds and won the first one. It can be said that "Every cloud has a silver lining". In English debate, I can cultivate my strain ability, improve my thinking logic and expand my interpersonal relationship. How fortunate I am to meet English debate and a group of warm friends and teachers in the club.
