Yunnan Mangkuan National Middle School
Mangkuan National Middle School is located at the foot of Mountain Gaoligong in Longyang District, Baoshan, Yunnan Province. It is the partner teaching location of Jiangnan University Graduate Student Education Assistance Group, and accommodates more than 1600 students from Han, Yi, Dai, Miao, Bai, Lisu and other ethnic groups. According to researches, many students' parents go out to work all year round, and many are divorced. Due to the lack of family companionship and family education, most children are introverted and short of channels to solve their psychological problems. Because of the poor economic conditions, most of the students have never even gone out of Mangkuan, and they are full of curiosity and expectation for the outside world. Therefore, we want to open another window for these children with letters as the medium.
What is “Stars Looking out” Project?
“Stars Looking out” Project is a partner assistance project in the form of letter initiated by Jiangnan University Graduate Student Education Assistence Group. The project aims to pay attention to the "leftover youth" group in remote areas, build a communication bridge between Yunnan Mangkuan National Middle School and Jiangnan University students, and communicate one-to-one with children in the form of letters and penfriends, helping children expand their horizons and open their hearts.

Since the first letter project, our volunteers have received enthusiastic response from the students of Mangkuan National Middle School. At the beginning, there were only 14 penfriends, but now there are nearly 300 young penfriends and volunteers. At the beginning, there were only dozens of letters, and now the accumulated number is nearly 2000 letters. It is the patience and kindness of Jiangnan University Graduate Student Education Assistance Group and the volunteers that set up a telescope for the children of Mangkuan National Middle School to look out of the mountains.
Volunteer Work
In this activity, our letters are written for junior high school students, hoping to know about their life through listening. If they ask about college life, please respond with a positive and optimistic attitude and encourage them to see the outside world more often.
This project is a public benefit activity and is in the early stage of development. The significance of making penfriends with children in west Yunnan may be far better than material rewards. We hope that volunteers can enjoy the communication process.
After successfully joining the project, volunteers will be matched with one student from Mangkuan National Middle School to make penfriends. A pair of penfriends will write letters to each other for one school year (3-5 stages) in the themes of "Hello, my friend", "Dream", "Secret" and so on. Every letter will receive the handwritten letter from children of Yunnan Mangkuan, and may also receive "little surprise" from these children.
Volunteer Registration Requirements
1. You should be students of Jiangnan University;
2. You should have correct values and good communication ability and be able to give positive guidance to your penfriends;
3. You should have voluntary service spirit, willing to give your love and patience to the children;
4. You should have a positive attitude towards the project and be responsible for it;
5. This volunteer recruitment activity includes preliminary screening and interview, and 70 volunteers are planned to be recruited.
6. The interview will be preliminary scheduled from 18:30-22:00 PM on November 1(Monday) and November 2(Tuesday), 2021. If you pass through the screening and enter the interview, you will be informed of the specific information of the interview through SMS.
