Further Study Report of Foreign Studies School in 2018

This report is about the further study of graduates from the Foreign Studies School in 2018. Sixty-six graduates of our school have been admitted to the master's degree program; fifty three from the English major students and thirteen from the Japanese major, accounting for 29.07% of the total number of this year’s undergraduate graduates. Eighteen of them have been admitted to "world-class universities" such as Peking University, Nanjing University, and Renmin University of China. Twenty one of them have successfully applied for further study in famous overseas universities in the United Kingdom, United States, and Japan. In order to help us further understand the process of preparing postgraduate studies, we interviewed Fen Yuan and Ni Xianyang, both from English 1404, to share their experiences with us. The information they provided are valuable for those who want to take the Postgraduate Entrance Examination, especially the interdisciplinary examinations.

With graduation around the corner, a report was conducted on the quantity of students from the School of Foreign Studies furthering their studies. From this report, we can conclude that 29.07% of the total numbers of this year’s undergraduate graduates were admitted to the master’s degree program; including fifty three English majors and thirteen Japanese majors, totaling sixty-six graduates. Eighteen of them have been admitted to "world-class universities" such as Peking University, Nanjing University, and Renmin University of China. Twenty one of them have successfully applied for further study in famous overseas universities in the United Kingdom, United States, and Japan.

Students may have doubts about furthering their studies. Therefore, we interviewed two outstanding senior graduates to share their experiences in the process of postgraduate studies.

Feng Yuan, from English 1404, has been admitted to the Art Design program at Jiangnan University. During the interview, Feng shared her experience on the process of taking the Postgraduate Entrance Examination. She mentioned that spending four years as an English major student helped her prepare for the English exam. English majors also have advantages in the English interview for the Postgraduate Entrance Examination. In order to cope with the pressure of the exam, she advised that everyone should take a proper rest and if possible, find a graduate student to help each other. In terms of time management, if you want to prepare for the examination, she suggested that you should better prepare in advance by at least two years.

Our second interviewee, Ni Xianyang, also from English 1404, has been admitted to University of Rochester for the Marketing Analysis program. She explained to us the specific procedures for foreign school applications, which can be divided into hard (academic) indicators and soft (experience) indicators.

Hard indicators:

Grade Point Average:GPA needs to be more than 3.0. Over 3.5 is recommended.

Language records:You need to score 7 points or more in IELTS and/or 100 points or more in TOEFL.

Graduate Record Examination:It is generally accepted. If you major in Business, you can take the Graduate Management Admission Test.

Soft indicators:

Fieldwork:It is recommended for Business majors to have done two or three internships.

Association and voluntary activities:These can demonstrate your leadership skills, organizational skills, and networking skills.

Additional points attained for:Research, study, or exchange experiences.

As foreign colleges attach much importance to fieldwork, she shared with us some of her experiences. Students can take advantage of media resources and job search websites such as Shi Xiseng, 51Job, or Ying Jiesheng.

These two graduates chose to take the interdisciplinary examination for postgraduate studies. The School of Foreign Studies encourages all students to broaden their horizon and take the postgraduate examinations.
